“Aahhh, The Thrill of the Mixed Breeds!!!” Whatever breed you plan on adopting in the future, do all the research you can on their unique characteristics. However, I ran across this wonderful quote a few years ago that goes like this… “If you can’t decide between a Shepherd, a Setter or a Poodle, get them all…adopt a mutt!” I guess I’ve lived this quote for some time since all five of my four-legged companions are mutts. I’ve always appreciated many different breeds and have myself had several purebreds in my time; however, I never stop appreciating the mixed breeds out there. So many humans fail to spay and/or neuter their pets and the shelters become inundated with thousands upon thousands of strays that have been abandoned because of irresponsible pet owners and thus adding to the many unregistered and mixed breeds in our local shelters. Of course there are several mixed breeds that are intentional but both the mixed and purebreds have a place in all dog lovers’ hearts. If you do own a dog, mutt or purebred, become a responsible pet owner and help control the pet population; have your dogs spayed or neutered. Now that we know you are going to be a responsible and caring human companion to your four-legged partner, lets look into the many advantages of owning a mixed breed dog… The mere fact that there are a so many unique characteristics of a mutt, it fascinates humans time and time again. So many mixed breeds have been featured in shows, events and performances and regarded as some of the most talented in the world. The versatility of the mixed breed is unprecedented and to this day has been almost unchallenged in the areas of skill, agility and performance. Another great advantage to owning a mutt is simple… It gives all those homeless shelter pets a chance in getting a new life-long friend and loving home. Thousands upon thousands of shelters are so crowded with unwanted mutts, as so many call them. Because of whatever reason, these wonderful mixed breeds are not given their fair chance to a wonderful life with some compassionate family or individual. Here you can find that unique little frisky fellah who looks right back at you with an open and loving heart. He is choosing you as well when he peers right into your soul through that wire cage… it’s all about the dogs, baby! Before you decide to go to a pet store and spend thousands of dollars on a designer purebred, give these guys a loving chance. They come cheap, and almost always spayed/neutered, de-wormed and vaccinations already administered for less than it would cost to just get your first set of shots at a local veterinarian! Check out your local shelters, bring your family and browse the long hall of beautiful furry companions waiting to fill your life with unlimited love. Big ones, small ones, short or long hair; there is one that fits you and your family. Another astonishing fact about a mutt is their unique personalities and traits…for example, a mixed Labrador, Pitt Bull and hound may have the stamina of a Pit, hunting drive of a Lab and disposition of a floppy-eared hound! You never know what to expect from these unique sweeties. I personally have a total of five dogs; four are mixed breeds (and the one purebred is not for certain pure either). All of them possess unique characteristics that are unmatched by the purebreds they are spawned from. One of our mixed breeds come from a boxer and hound mix. She lovingly has the hyperactivity of a Boxer but is tempered by the hound instinct to roam and be the curious sight hound and loves to snuggle and play with children with no threat of danger. You never know what you’re going to get with a mixed breed but this can also be in the purebreds no matter how far the bloodlines go… they all possess their own uniqueness about them, either way. A Chihuahua may have that staunch, “Napoleon syndrome” while mixed with some other more docile breeds, he or she may be the wonderful, less-temperamental breed who is in turn less jealous, more sturdy and more accepting for the little ones around the house. You can’t go wrong with the wayward mutt from you local shelter! Its like adopting a child…you have every size and shape to choose from so one way to look at it…you are in fact, creating your “designer dog”! Folks, just remember…the next time you decide on your first or fifteenth dog, consider all those homeless shelter dogs that are just wanting to give their unconditional love to you. Please, support your local shelters and rescue agencies by either a generous monthly donation or by adopting a dog or even cat…yes, they need homes too!!!
